Holidays With a Twist

5 million visitors are expected to travel to New York during the holidays this year. And, you can be certain it will include some traditional holiday festivities. Sometimes it’s nice to do things off the beaten path which adds to why this city is so magical during the holidays.

Where do we start? Tree lighting of course - but let’s replace the traditional pine tree with the Natural History Museums’ Origami Tree. Standing almost 12 feet tall, this year’s theme is over 800 hand folded “Origami Dinosaurs Among Us”. Inspired to learn how to fold your own paper ornament? Take advantage of the volunteers on hand who can teach the art of paper folding for a fun afternoon activity for all ages. 

For us, it starts to feel like the holidays when the streets start getting lit by the twinkle lights adored to trees, storefronts, and garland. If you’re the same, we suggest taking a trip to Brooklyn’s Dyker Heights where you’ll see houses with over-the-top, spectacular decorations. From now until New Year’s Eve is actually the best time to visit. And, if you’re visiting during December 24 - 31st, maybe you take in the world’s largest Menorah on display at Grand Army Plaza. Learn about Chanukah, listen to live music, enjoy hot latkas, and receive a gift for the children.

We love our traditions during the holidays, but sometimes it’s nice to throw in something different. What always stays the same is our love of jumping into the festivities and embracing the holiday season with people we love.
